Developing and Aligning the Innovation Vision and Strategy to the Strategic Priorities
Latrobe Community Health Service
Latrobe Community Health Service (LCHS) is one of Australia's fastest-growing health services. They aim to prevent health problems through information and awareness and to intervene sooner through the delivery of truly integrated healthcare.
The organisation is built around four directorates; Corporate, Aged and Community Care, National Disability Insurance Scheme Services and Primary Health.
They provide a range of health services across Australia, including:
GP services in Gippsland and metropolitan Melbourne.
Planning and early childhood early intervention services for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) across Victoria.
Planning services for the NDIS in South Eastern Sydney.
Home care services for older people across the state of Victoria.
Veterans' Home Care assessment and coordination services in Western Australia.
WHAT IS THE INNOVATION QUICK WIN?
Innovation readiness work had previously been undertaken. It showed that innovation activities occur inconsistently in pockets of the organisation and that LCHS has a high innovation potential. The work also highlighted the need for the development of a clear definition and vision for innovation at LCHS and an innovation strategy.
LCHS engaged Chase Consulting to develop its innovation strategy and a consistent definition and vision for innovation at LCHS.
Chase's approach throughout this engagement was to focus on making the innovation strategy actionable!
This approach did not concentrate on the innovation tactics, such as setting up an ideas challenge; but on how to establish an innovation system and the organisation's culture for innovation to deliver improved health and social wellbeing outcomes.
To set up the project for success, we collaborated extensively with the innovation team and the Executive, and we leveraged the innovation readiness work previously undertaken.
The innovation vision workshop explored options and best practices to develop the innovation vision. The Innovation Vision is a concise statement which defines what innovation will achieve for LCHS. The innovation vision is realistic and easy to understand and remember by staff and stakeholders. In determining the innovation vision, we ensured it was aligned to the corporate plan and the organisation values.
To develop the Innovation Strategy, we reviewed many innovation best practices from medium-size and large-sized organisations around the world.
The innovation strategy workshop developed the innovation priorities and outcomes with a focus on both the 12-month priorities and the five-year outcomes. One of the critical priorities was to codesign and establish the innovation management system and the organisation's culture for innovation.
HOW DID THIS FIT IN THE OVERALL STRATEGY?
The outcomes have enabled LCHS to develop and implement it's innovation priorities for the next 12-months.
LCHS is establishing its innovation management system and enhancing the organisation's culture for innovation.
One of the fundamental benefits in establishing the innovation framework and enhancing the organisation's culture for innovation is that it takes innovation from a series of one-off projects to a repeatable process delivering improved health and social wellbeing outcomes.
